Part II - Eden to Jindabyne

Von Eden aus ging’s nach Mallacoota. Auf dem Weg haben wir uns das Cape Green Lighthouse angeguckt wo wir diesen Kerl auf der Straße gesehen haben:

We left Eden with our next destination being Mallacoota. On the way we had a look at the Cape Green Lighthouse where we saw this fella on the road:

When we got to Mallacoota, I wanted to head to the Jetty first, as someone I worked with in Bowen said that the gutting of fish would bring in pelicans. It did, too! I could watch those birds forever. Aren’t they just amazing?

Als wir dann in Mallacoota waren, wollte ich als erstes zum Jetty (Steg), weil mir jemand mit dem ich damals in Bowen gearbeitet hab, erzählt hatte, dass das Ausnehmen von Fischen Pelikane anzieht. Und wie es das tat!! Ich könnte den Vögeln stundenlang zugucken. Sind sie nicht einfach klasse?

We then had a look at a few other attractions of the town: the Narrows which is a beautiful water way connecting the top and bottom lake. At Tip Beach we saw and climbed the big sand hill.Great view from up there onto the beach.

Ein paar andere Sehenswürdigkeiten waren: die Narrows, eine Art Meerenge (nur ohne Meerwasser), die den Top und Bottom Lake verbindet. Am Tip Beach haben wir den Big Sand Hill angeschaut und erklummen. Toller Blick von oben auf den Strand runter.

Later in the afternoon, we headed into the Croajingolong National Park, a small but pretty park, where we wanted to stay for the night (at Shipwreck Beach). After dinner, when it was dark, we had a curious and greedy little visitor.

Spät am Nachmittag sind wir dann in den Croajingolong National Park, einen kleinen aber sehr schönen Park, gefahren. Dort wollten wir auch für die Nacht bleiben, am Shipwreck Beach. Nach dem Abendessen, als es schon dunkel war, hatten wir einen (neu)gierigen kleinen Besucher.

The next morning we went further through the park towards Cann River. We spent a bit of time at Hicks Point which is a pretty beach but got one major downside: March flies!!! They are those dreadful things I had a picture of in my last post (the flies with the huge snorkel).

Am nächsten Morgen gings tiefer in den Park hinein und nach Cann River. Wir haben recht viel Zeit am Hicks Point verbracht. Der Strand dort war toll, aber hatte einen riesigen Minuspunkt: March Flies!!!! Das sind diese fiesen Dinger, von denen in meinem letzen Post ein Foto war (Fliegen mit Riesenrüssel).

The places you can go to with a 4WD :)

Through the Lind National Park we drove to Bombala, where we stayed for the night. We had read that this is one of the best spots to look for platypus, so we did... and got extremely lucky. We must have seen about 5 platypuses in about an hour.-if not more. We watched silently from a wooden jetty-like thing and one of them just emerged about 10 cm in front of me. Fantastic!!!

Durch den Lind National Park kamen wir nach Bombala, wo wir über Nacht geblieben sind. Wir hatten gelesen, dass hier einer der besten Orte sei, um Platypus zu sehen. Tatsächlich!!! Wir haben mindestens 5 gesehen, wenn nicht mehr. Und das in ungefähr einer Stunde. Wir haben still und leise von einer Art Holzsteg aus beobachtet und eins ist ungefähr 10cm vor mir aufgetaucht. Fantastisch!!!

We continued to Cooma which lies already within the Australian Alps. The landscape changed dramatically. Naked snow gums stood tall at the side of the road and contrasted the blue sky enormously.

Wir sind dann nach Cooma gefahren, was schon innerhalb der Australischen Alpen liegt. Die Landschaft änderte sich daher dramatisch. Kahle snow gums ragten auf beiden Seiten der Straße empor und bildeten einen starken Kontrast gegen den blauen Himmel.

Our next plan was to climb Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain on the mainland, but as I had been stung by a bee the other day and my foot was quite painful and swollen, we decided to leave it for a few days until my foot got better. Instead, we did some 4x4 tracks first. We were heading a north from a place called Adaminaby but at Ravine the Yarrangobilly River was too high and having no snorkel on the car, we had to turn around. We drove south and then westwards and passed the Turmut Pond Reservoir, which is a HUGE dam used for the Snowy Mountain Scheme (use water for energy). We took the Major Clews Trail which led to Major Clew’s hut.

At the Swampy Plain River we were forced – yet again - to turn around as the water level was way too high and the water was very fast flowing, too.

Eigentlich wäre unser nächster Plan gewesen, den Mt. Kosciuszko zu besteigen, Australiens höchsten Berg (auf dem Festland), aber da ich ein paar Tage zuvor von einer Biene gestochen worden war und mein Fuß immer noch ziemlich geschwollen war und weh tat, hatten wir uns entschieden, zu warten, bis der Fuß besser würde. Stattdessen gings auf einen weiteren 4x4 Track. Wir sind nach Adaminaby und von dort aus Richtung Norden gefahren doch bei Ravine zwang uns der Yarrangobilly River zum Umkehren, da wir keinen Schnorchel am Auto haben und der Wasserstand viel zu hoch war. Südöstlich kamen wir dann am Turmut Pond Reservoir vorbei, einem RIESIGEN Damm, der ein wichtiger Teil der Snowy Mountain Scheme darstellt (Wasserenergie erzeugen). Dann ging’s über den Major Clews Trail zur Major Clew’s Hut.

Am Swampy Plain River wurden wir dann erneut zum Umkehren gezwungen, da der Wasserstand wieder sehr hoch war und leider diesmal auch die Strömung unglaublich stark war.

We spent the night at Scammel’s lookout and watched the sun beautifully setting over the Snowy Mountains.

Wir haben die Nacht beim Scammel’s lookout verbracht und einen wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang über den Snowy Mountains beobachten können.

We had a look at Geehi hut the next morning and passed Thredbo, which, not being its main season, looked like a deserted zombie village. We came into Jindabyne where we wanted to stay until my foot got better and the weather improved. In the end, we stayed three days there, not doing much at all. :)

Wir haben am nächsten Morgen Geehi Hut angeschaut und kamen durch Thredbo, was außerhalb der Hauptsaison wie eine verlassene Zombie-Stadt wirkte, nach Jindabyne. Dort wollten wir bleiben bis mein Fuß und auch das Wetter besser würden. Im Endeffekt haben wir 3 Tage dort verbracht ohne wirklich viel zu tun. :)
