Kangaroo Island here I come! As you can imagine I took tons of pictures. Making a selection was really difficult so if you think it might be a bit much, I apologise in advance. :)
I left Port Willunga early in the morning (5 am) and drove to the ferry port at Cape Jervis.
Als wir dann schließlich in Mclaren Vale angekommen waren, fing Markus ziemlich direkt mit Arbeiten an. Ich hatte mich entschieden, einen Trip nach Kangaroo Island zu machen. Markus war schon dort und ich wollte eh mal einen Trip alleine machen (hatte ich in den ganzen 2,5 Jahren ja nicht).
Erstmal hab ich mir eine NEUE KAMERA gekauft!!!! Olympus Pen Mini. Die ist sooo toll!!!
Jetzt konnte Kangaroo Island kommen! Wie ihr euch sicher denken könnt, hab ich etliche Bilder gemacht! Die Auswahl zu treffen war wirklich schwer, also wenn es für euer Empfinden etwas viel geworden ist, dann bitte ich schonmal im Voraus um Entschuldigung. :)
Ich musste von Port Willunga aus recht früh losfahren (um 5 Uhr) damit ich rechtzeitig am Fährhafen in Cape Jervis war.
When I drove onto the ferry the sun was just coming up which looked absolutely beautiful.
Als ich auf die Fähre fuhr, ging die Sonne gerade auf. Total schön.
The weather was perfect: it was about 40°C and not a cloud in the sky :) I had 9 days on the island. From Penneshaw (ferry port) I started off towards the North Coast first, drove to the centre, West Coast, South Coast and via the East Coast back to Penneshaw. My first stop was Island Beach which was amazing. A little board walk led you down to the white endless beach. Not a soul was there, apart from this Pacific Gull:
Das Wetter war perfekt: es war um die 40°C und keine Wolke am Himmel. :) Ich hatte insgesamt 9 Tage auf der Insel. Von Penneshaw aus (Hafen) fuhr ich zuerst Richtung Nordküste, dann ein bisschen im Zentrum, über die Westküste zur Südküste und dann bis zur Ostküste und wieder nach Penneshaw. Mein erster Stopp war am Island Beach, der absolut fantastisch war! Ein kleiner Holzsteg führte an den endlosen, weißen Strand. Und das Beste: Niemand dort außer dieser Pazifikmöwe:

I then drove to Prospect Hill which offers a 360° view. Half way up the hill those signs tell you what kind of inhabitants or at least their tracks you're likely to see.
Dann fuhr ich zum Prospect Hill von wo aus man einen tollen 360°C Blick über die Gegend hat. Ungefähr auf halber Strecke den Hügel hoch hingen diese Schilder, die einen auf die Bewohner des Hügels aufmerksam machen sollten.

Pelican Lagoon. Looks pretty but you can't get up close to any birds, unfortunately.
Pelican Lagoon sah zwar toll aus, aber man konnte leider nicht nah genug ran um auch nur einen einzigen Vogel zu sehen.

I continued to Red Banks, which, according to the tourist booklet, is a well kept secret. It's a stretch of ochre coloured cliffs. Beautiful contrast to the blue sky and the sea.
Von dort aus ging's zu den Red Banks, die laut Führer, ein wohlbehütetes Geheimnis seien. Es ist ein Klippenzug aus ockerfarbigem Sandstein. Wunderschöner Kontrast zum blauen Himmel und dem Meer.
I then checked into the only caravan park in the eastern part of kangaroo island. The place is called Brownlow. I went for a walk at the town beach before heading back to the caravan park to have dinner and write a post to my blog.
Gegen Nachmittag checkte ich im einzigen Caravan Park auf der Ostseite der Insel ein. Der Ort heißt Brownlow. Nach dem Einchecken bin ich am Stadtstrand spazieren gegangen bevor ich dann zurück im Park Reis gekocht hab und einen Post für meinen Blog geschrieben hab.
The next morning, I was heading towards Emu Bay (North Coast) when a sign post caught my eye: Island Beehive which is one of the two honey farms/shops on KI. I pulled over and where I turned around (at the side of the road) I found this little one sunbathing:
Am nächsten Morgen war ich eigentlich auf dem Weg nach Emu Bay (Nordküste), als ich einen Wegweiser zum Island Beehive erblickte. Der Island Beehive (Beehive=Bienenstock) ist eine von 2 Honigfarmen auf der Insel. Da ich diese auch gerne sehen wollte, bin ich kurz an den Rand gefahren um zu wenden und habe dabei diesen kleinen Kerl beim Sonnenbaden entdeckt:

After I had looked around the shop for a while, met the sister of a friend who used to work with me in Mclaren Vale and ate scones with honey and cream (yum), I continued to Emu Bay.
When I got there I was surprised to find out that you're allowed to take the car onto the beach. I drove down a fair bit, went for a run and just relaxed. Wonderful!
Late in the afternoon, I drove back to Brownlow as I had been invited to a BBQ by someone I had met the day before. It was quite a funny night really. I got to cuddle and feed the neighbour's joey (baby kangaroo). Made my day. :)
Nachdem ich eine Weile im Geschäft herumgeschaut hatte, die Schwester von einem Freund aus Mclaren Vale getroffen und Scones (süße Brötchen) mit Honig und Sahne (lecker!) gegessen hatte, fuhr ich weiter nach Emu Bay. Als ich dort ankam, war ich überrascht zu sehen, dass man das Auto mit an den Strand nehmen konnte. Ich bin ein Stück weit am Strand entlang gefahren und hab dann den Tag (erst joggend und dann relaxend) dort verbracht. Wunderschön.
Spät am Nachmittag bin ich nach Brownlow zurückgefahren, weil ich dort von Jemandem zu einem BBQ eingeladen worden war, den ich am Tag zuvor getroffen hatte. Der Abend war wirklich nett. Ich durfte das Baby Känguru der Nachbarin knuddeln und sogar füttern. Da war der Abend natürlich schon perfekt! :)

When I got up the next day, I drove back to Emu Bay as I liked it that much. I stayed till about mid day.From there I drove to Stokes Bay which is pretty much in the centre of the north coast. It has a nice sandy strip of beach which you can reach by walking through some boulders (like a cave). I walked up and down the beach and then tried to cool down in a rock pool. It was still really hot!
Als ich am nächsten Tag aufgestanden bin, ging's nochmal nach Emu Bay weil ich es dort so toll fand. Ich bin ungefähr den halben Tag dortgeblieben und dann nach Stokes Bay gefahren, das ungefähr in der Mitte der Nordküste liegt. Es gibt dort einen schönen kleinen Sandstrand den man nur findet, wenn man durch ein paar Felsblöcke (wie Höhlen) läuft. Ich bin den Strand bis zum Ende gegangen (wie gesagt nicht sehr lang) und hab dann versucht, in einem Rockpool abzukühlen. War immer noch toll heiß!

I later checked into a camp ground at Stokes Bay (NOT a caravan park - no electricity, no showers just toilets) and while I was just preparing dinner my neighbours (Greg and Cheryl) returned to their parked caravan. We started chatting immediately and in the end I went over to have dinner with them and we sat till late. It was really nice meeting them. Cheryl and me fed the wallabies grapes and carrots all night. :)
Ich hab dann später auch in den Campingplatz (KEIN Caravan Park - kein Strom, keine Duschen nur Toiletten) eingecheckt und war grad dabei Abendessen zu machen, als meine Nachbarn (Greg und Cheryl) zu ihrem schon abgestellten Caravan zurück kamen. Wir kamen sofort ins Quatschen und schlußendlich hab ich den ganzen Abend dort verbracht und wir saßen bis spät in die Nacht. Wirklich nette Leute. Cheryl und ich haben die Wallabies den ganzen Abend mit Trauben und Möhren gefüttert. :)

On the way to the toilet block I found this scorpion (dead) which really surprised me as I had no idea they had scorpions on the island!
Auf dem Weg zum Toilettenblock hab ich diesen Skorpion gefunden (schon tot), was mich sehr überrascht hat, da ich keine Ahnung hatte, dass es auf Kangaroo Island sowas gibt.
Before heading off the next day, I had breakfast with my new friends again. After having said goodbye, I went to Will's Rare Breeds Farm where some rare farm animals can be seen.
Bevor es am nächsten Tag weiter ging, hatte ich noch Frühstück mit meinen neuen Freunden. Nach dem Abschied fuhr ich zu Will's Rare Breeds Farm. Hier werden seltene Arten von allerlei Farmtieren gezüchtet.

After the tour I rushed to Paul's Place, a wildlife sanctuary about 5 minutes away. I was really looking forward to seeing the place and also wanted to ask the guys there if they needed any help by chance. They didn't. But it was a fantastic experience nevertheless.
The tour started pretty much straight away and hands-on :)
Nach der Führung bin ich schnell zu Paul's Place, einer Art Tierpark (der anderen Art) gefahren, die ca 5 Minuten entfernt ist. Ich hatte mich schon Tage vorher total drauf gefreut und ich wollte auch dort nachfragen, ob sie zufällig Hilfe bräuchten. Taten sie leider nicht. Aber es war trotzdem eine tolle Erfahrung.
Die Tour ging auch direkt los undzwar "hautnah".

Eine Koaladame mit Baby. :) Sooo niedlich. Ich wollt sie gar nicht mehr hergeben obwohl sie nach einer Weile doch etwas schwer wurde.
For the next event, Paul grabbed people by their arm, placed them infront of the green fence and before you knew what was happening you had wheat flying all over you and the emus eating off your head frantically. The beaks didn't even hurt as much as you might imagine but how they were pulling my hair hurt a bit. I think I looked like a scare crow afterwards. Up to the evening I found wheat in all my clothes and hair. It was EVERYWHERE!
Für das nächste Event hat Paul sich Leute geschnappt, sie am Arm vor den grünen Zaun gezogen und ehe man wusste wie einem geschieht, stand man quasi unter einer Dusche aus Weizen, die dann die Emus wie verrückt von deinem Kopf pickten. Die Schnabelhiebe haben gar nicht so wehgetan, wie man meint, aber das An-den-Haaren-zerren dabei schon. Ich glaub ich sah danach aus wie eine Vogelscheuche. Bis spät abends hab ich noch Weizenkeime in meinem Haar und der Kleidung gefunden. Das Zeug war einfach ÜBERALL!

For some reason when I heard of bottle-feeding a kangaroo, I imagined the kangaroo to be a lot smaller. :)
Aus irgendeinem Grund hab ich mir das Kängaru kleiner vorgestellt, als ich hörte wir könnten einem das "Fläschchen geben".

But the kangaroos on the island are really cute. They are a bit smaller and darker than their mainland equivalents. These ones ONLY exist on kangaroo island.
Aber die Kängurus hier sind wirklich süß. Sie sind ein bisschen kleiner und dunkler als ihre Genossen auf dem Festland. Diese Kängurus gibt es auch tatsächlich NUR auf der Insel.

I left Paul's Place late in the afternoon and went to Parndana (centre of KI pretty much) to stay for the night. The main pub in town offers free camping behind the hotel. Nice :)
Spät am Nachmittag konnte ich mich von Paul's Place losreißen und bin nach Parndana gefahren (Zentrum der Insel) um dort zu bleiben. Der Pub dort bietet freies Camping hinter dem Gebäude an. Nett. :)
When I pulled up at the camping spot, I met two guys from Adelaide who turned out to be the artists for the town's steel sculptures (above picture). They had been here a few years ago and were back to set up some new cuttings throughout town. We had dinner together and sat for a while with drinks.
Als ich auf den Hof fuhr, hab ich zwei Jungs aus Adelaide kennengelernt, die, wie sich herausstellte, die Künstler waren, die die Stahlschilder und -skulpturen in der Stadt entworfen und aufgestellt hatten (s. oberes Bild). Sie waren vor einigen Jahren schonmal hier und waren jetzt grade wieder gerufen worden um weitere Schilder am anderen Stadtende aufzustellen. Wir haben zusammen gegessen und saßen noch eine Weile bei Wein und Bier zusammen.

At Admiral's Arch, a day later or so, I wanted to see New Zealand Fur Seals. If it hadn't been for the bloody freezing (and STRONG) wind I could have spend the whole day watching them. It was fabulous.
Bei Admiral's Arch wollte ich am nächsten Tag oder so neuseeländische Seelöwen sehen. Wenn nicht der eisige und viel zu starte Wind gewesen wäre, hätte ich den ganzen Tag dort verbringen können. Es war unglaublich!

When I went back to KI visitor centre (or to the picnic spot close by) I was just waiting for the rice to boil, when 4 lovely people came along. They turned out to be "old friends" who I had met during the tour at Paul's Place. We had lunch together before each went their own ways again. Lovely people. :)
Als ich zurück zum KI Visitor Centre (beziehungsweise dem nahegelegenen Picknickplatz) zurückfuhr und grade darauf wartete, dass der Reis kocht, kamen 4 liebenswerte Menschen vorbei. Es waren auch "alte" Freunde, die ich zuvor bei Paul's Place getroffen hatte. Wir haben zusammen gegessen bevor dann jeder seiner Wege ging. Sehr liebe Menschen.

The weather was quite nice so I decided to do the 4km Snake Lagoon Hike. Beautiful scenery:
Da das Wetter heute wieder ganz schön war, beschloss ich die 4km lange Snake Lagoon "Wanderung" zu machen. Tolle Landschaft:

This beach is where the hike leads to. Then back again. All in all it took maybe 1.5 - 2 hours.
Zu diesem Strand führt die Wanderung. Dann wieder zurück. Alles in allem hat es ca 1,5 - 2 Stunden gedauert.
The following morning the weather was pretty bad (cold, windy and rainy). I drove to West Bay which is pretty spectacular with it's story about the Loch Venachar with 27 lives lost. In 1905 the ship apparently had sailed directly into the rocks under the cliffs near West Bay due to bad weather conditions. The sharp rocks and a sea teeming with sharks left no hope for survivors.
Am nächsten Morgen war das Wetter leider sehr schlecht (kalt, windig und regnerisch). Ich bin zur West Bay gefahren, die trotzdem ziemlich spektakulär ist. Vorallem wegen der gruseligen Geschichte über die Loch Venachar (ein Schiff), die hier 1905 Schiffbruch erlitt. Anscheinend steuerte das Schiff in schlechten Wetterbedingungen direkt auf die Klippen zu. Durch die messerscharfen Felsen und weil das Meer von Haien wimmelte, hatte keiner der 27 Menschen an Bord eine Überlebenschance.

Back at the Visitor Centre, I went for a quick walk ("Discovery Walk").
Wieder am Visitor Centre angekommen hab ich den Discovery Walk gemacht, aber nur kurz, weil das Wetter eben nicht danach war.

At Hanson Bay Sanctuary, you could do a koala walk but it was a bit disappointing regarding the koalas. Nevertheless, there were heaps of wallabies and lots of birds. :)
Bei Hanson Bay konnte man einen Koala Walk machen, der allerdings, was die Koalas anging, recht enttäuschend war. Trotzdem war allerdings schön, dass so viele Wallabies und Vögel zu sehen waren.

I checked in at Vivonne Bay campground (checked in early in the day) as the weather was still crap. Freezing cold and pouring rain.
When I got up the weather was still horrible. Despite the weather I decided to go to see Little Sahara. It is really nice. You just follow a little trail into the bush over a long sandy open and BANG: a huge sand dune just in fron of you. Amazing. Once you climb that one, several others are revealed in the distance. I was lucky too: for the time I spent in the dunes the rain stopped and even the sun came out for a while.
Ich hab, da das Wetter immer schlechter wurde, schon früh im Campingplatz bei Vivonne Bay eingecheckt. Inzwischen war es saukalt und hat in Strömen geregnet.
Als ich aufgewacht bin am nächsten Tag, war es leider kein Stück besser. Ich hab mir also Zeit gelassen und bin dann trotz schlechtem Wetter zur Little Sahara gefahren. Das war auch wirklich schön. Man folgt vom Parkplatz aus einem kleinen Weg in den Busch und dann über eine Sandfläche und plötzlich steht man vor einer riesigen Sanddüne! Wahnsinn. Wenn man diese dann erklommen hat, werden einem noch viele weitere in der Ferne offenbart. Ich hatte auch etwas Glück: für die Zeit, die ich in den Dünen verbracht hab, hat es nicht geregnet und für einige Minuten kam sogar die Sonne raus. :)

On the way back to the car a snake lay in the way. I almost stepped on it. Luckily, after a while it slithered away into the bush.
Auf dem Weg zurück zum Auto lag diese Schlange vor mir. Ich wäre fast auf sie draufgetreten. Zum Glück ist sie nach einer Weile ins Gebüsch verschwunden.
I then drove to seal bay and even though most people had said to me not to worry about the guided tour (more expensive) I went for it. And thank God I did. I did the boardwalk (which costs less on its own but is included in the price of a guided tour if you choose one) later and would have been utterly upset had I just paid for that one. The tour, yet windy and cold, was fantastic. The tour guide, Tony, explained a lot about the sea lions and took us real close (onto the beach). It was fantastic. We learned that sea lions can come in about a kilometer inland to seek shelter from the wind. She also told us that mothers go out offshore feeding for three days in a row, swimming for miles and miles then tree days of resting on the beach. Her young stay on the beach. While other females protect them, their mum is the only one to feed them. So, while mum's "home" the pup pretty much eats all the time.
Ich bin dann zur Seal Bay gefahren und auch wenn die meisten Leute mir abgeraten hatten, eine geführte Tour zu buchen, hab ich mich dennoch dazu entschieden. Gott sei Dank!!! Ich hab die normale Tour, die zwar wesentlich günstiger ist aber auch in der geführten Tour mit inbegriffen ist, nach der geführten Tour gemacht und wäre unglaublich enttäuscht gewesen, wenn ich nur diese gemacht hätte. Die geführte Tour hingegen war unglaublich! Unser Tourguide, Tony, hat uns richtig nah zu den Seehunden gebracht (auf den Strand runter). Toll! Sie hat uns erzählt, dass Seehunde bis zu einem Kilometer inland "laufen" um sich vor Wind zu schützen. Außerdem haben wir gelernt, dass Seehundweibchen 3 Tage am Stück zur Futtersuche im Meer verbringen, dabei etliche Kilometer zurücklegen und sich dann 3 Tage am Stück an Land ausruhen. Ihre Jungen bleiben während ihrer Abwesenheit an Land zurück und die anderen Weibchen passen auf sie auf. Die Mutter ist allerdings die Einzige, die sie füttert. Daher ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass, wenn di Mutter dann zurück ist, die kleinen Non-Stop trinken.

Then I drove to Bald Hill (lagoon) to gor for one of the walks. Not a lot of birds there unfortunately.
Dann bin ich nach Bald Hill (Lagune) gefahren, wo man auch Vögel sehen sollte. Leider war nicht viel los. Gar nix eigentlich.

On the way to Wreckers Beach/Wheaters Beach there were about 4 fallen trees on the road.
Auf dem Weg zu Wreckers Beach/Wheaters Beach waren 4 umgestürzte Bäume auf der Straße.
As it was getting late I was trying to decide where to stay. When I got to Wreckers Beach, I didn't want to stay there as it was a bit spooky and no other people around.
Same for Wheaters Beach. I drove around for a while not sure where to go. In the end, I had the idea to stay at Cliffords Honey Farm, where I had planned to go the next day anyway. When I got there, I tried to find the owners but they weren't home. I left a note at their door and parked the car in the shade of some trees.
The next morning there was a car in the drive way. Eventually, a man appeared. I got out of the car and asked him if he found my note. He said he hadn't. I explained him everything and apologised but he just smiled and said "that's ok"! Good start for the day.
Da es mal wieder recht spät war, wollte ich nach einem Ort suchen, wo ich für die Nacht bleiben könnte. Ich hab mir Wreckers Beach angeschaut, wo auch eine Camp-Area ist aber es war niemand sonst dort und allein war mir das zu unheimlich. Das Gleiche war beim Wheaters Beach camp spot. Ich bin dann ne Weile umhergefahren und wusste nicht so recht wohin, bis ich mich dann schließlich dafür entschieden hab, zu Cliffords Honey Farm zu fahren, wo ich eh am nächsten Tag reinschauen wollte. Ich hab am Wohnhaus geklopft und gewartet aber es war niemand zu Hause. Nach einer Weile und viel Unschlüssigkeit hab ich einen Zettel geschrieben und an der Haustür hinterlassen. Darin hab ich ihnen erzählt, wieso ich hier bleiben möchte und dass, wenn es sie stört, sie mein Auto hinter den und den Bäumen finden.
Am nächsten Morgen stand ein Auto in der Einfahrt und nach einer Weile kam ein Mann über den Hof. Ich bin aus dem Auto raus und hab ihn gefragt, ob er meinen Zettel gefunden hätte. Hatte er nicht. Ich hab ihm alles erklärt, mich entschuldigt aber er lachte mich nur an und sagte: "Das ist ok!". Guter Start in den Tag. :)

Die Farm war auch richtig interessant. Ich hab dann auch Honig und Souvenirs gekauft.
I drove to Flour Cask Bay, drove around a bit (crap weather) stoppig at Penneshaw, Brown Beach, Cape Willoughby and Antechamber Bay. Chapman River was a fantastic spot even with the weather being bad. Really peaceful . Then back to Penneshaw.
Zum Abschluss bin ich noch kurz an ein paar Stellen vorbeigefahren, aber wegen des Wetters nicht lange geblieben: Flour Cask Bay, Brown Beach, Cape Willoughby and Antechamber Bay. Chapman River war ein toller Ort, selbst bei schlechtem Wetter. Sehr friedlich. Dann nach Penneshaw zurück.
When I was sitting in the car in Penneshaw waiting for the ferry I looked at the map in the visitor guides with all the circles, notes and comments to the spots I have been to. It really is a lot for 9 days. But it was great. I'm glad I stayed that long... bit sad that the weather changed so drastically (from 40° to about 13° and rain). Yet, the trip and the things I saw were stunning. The amount of wildlife incredible!!! Kangaroo Island, I love you!
Als ich dann im Auto saß und auf die Fähre gewartet hab, hab ich mir die Faltkarte mal angeschaut, wo ich alles markiert und notiert hab was ich gemacht hab. Ist ganz schön viel für 9 Tage. Aber es war absolut fantastisch. Bin froh, dass ich die 9 Tage hatte. Bisschen schade, dass das Wetter sich so drastisch verändert hat (von 40°C auf 13°C und Regen). Trotz des Wetters war der Trip und die Dinge, die ich gesehen habe, einfach fantastisch und die Anzahl der Tiere unglaublich!!!! Ich liebe dich, Kangaroo Island!
